Changelog
v2.0.5
April 3, 2023
- Fixed an issue that let you replay the daily puzzle after you'd finished it. (Big oof.)
- Made a minor adjustment to the app icon to (hopefully) avoid it being cut off on Android home screens
v2.0.4
November 7, 2022
Fix an issue with the daily puzzle loading (caused by Daylight Savings Time ending. Whoops)!
Also: removed LogRocket monitoring.
v2.0.3
July 28, 2022
Moved from the Nuxt PWA module to assets generated by PWABuilder.com. Also: updated the keyboard to add a bit more space at the bottom on taller screens.
v2.0.2
May 16, 2022
Some additional error guards to prevent unwanted state (like a saved game that you can't end)
v2.0.1
May 15, 2022
Fix a bug that could result in being unable to start a new unlimited game after a loss.
v2.0.0
May 11, 2022
New Daily Word
Play the word of the day and share your results with friends! (Seems like a popular idea these days.)
- All Daily games are played with no hints or extra features.
- Daily words are randomly pulled from the Expanded word set (though I've avoided some of the more obscure words)
- The previous mode is now known as "Unlimited" (and as the name implies, you can still play as much of it as you like).
New Chaos Mode
You can now optionally begin Unlimited games with four guesses of completely random letters. (These guesses do not contain repeated letters, but otherwise do not adhere to the normal rules of the game, and are not valid words). They might be helpful; they might be a total waste. CHAOS MODE!
New Pandemonium word set
Includes every single legal guess as a potential code word. For players who really enjoy a challenge, or who just want to show off their knowledge of obscure five-letter English words.
Gameplay enhancements
Now, when you cross out a letter, all instances of the same letter are crossed out automatically. Similarly, when highlighting a letter, all instances of that letter in that same position will also be highlighted automatically. Both types of marked letters are also saved with your game now, so they'll still be in place after you leave a game and come back.
Revamped gameplay screen
There's now a keyboard on-screen and less visual clutter. This allows some handy new features, like showing on your keyboard which letters you've crossed out and/or highlighted.
Other smaller, but still notable changes:
- The Tricky set has been removed. It seemed like four word sets were too many, and Tricky felt a little redundant anyway, since all the Tricky words were already in Random (which was arguably more challenging to begin with, since there's an implicit hint in knowing your word is a tricky one). So, the Random set has been renamed to Expanded. Any Tricky stats you might have had previously will be lumped in with Expanded stats now.
- The awards have been updated to reflect the new game modes and other changes. Some older awards are no longer there (sorry), but there are new awards to unlock.
- There are no more prompts to support or rate Quina, and all its features are free and unlocked by default. There's still a Ko-Fi link in the FAQ if you really want to support me (thank you). (It's still paid on the Google Play Store, however, mostly just because I can't change that.)
- Loads of other small UI tweaks, bug fixes, and and improvements (especially on iOS).
Special shout-out to Andrew Walpole for being perhaps the world's most prolific Quina player, as well as a beta tester, and source of feedback and encouragement to push Quina even further.
v1.4.2
February 2, 2022
- Bug fix: one word in the potential code word list was not considered a legal guess. 😱 (Thanks, Susan, for reporting it without being `JUDGY`.)
v1.4.1
February 1, 2022
- Slight fix to the new chart to prevent bars with high numbers from overflowing the page.
- Also: better accessibility for the chart.
v1.4.0
February 1, 2022
- Happy Chinese New Year! Added a chart to the stats page showing your distribution of guesses in games. (Yes, this is directly inspired by Wordle. P.S., I am open to offers. 😉)
v1.3.6
January 7, 2022
- Game now automatically saves locally after each guess, so that going idle or closing your game app won't clear out your progress so far.
v1.3.5
January 6, 2022
- Back after a long break to set up some snazzy custom scrollbars, and help things to not shift around when transitioning between pages (on Chrome and Edge, at least). 🤞 This doesn't break stuff.
v1.3.4
June 8, 2021
- Fixes issues with social share images, so now when you share Quina on social media, you are greeted with the dazzling beauty of a bespoke PNG.
v1.3.3
May 5, 2021
- Fixes a bug where turning sound effects off doesn’t save and load properly.
- Fixes a bug where some in-game motion effects aren't disabled by the "reduce motion" setting.
- Updates the quick start guide to be a little less verbose and redundant and repetitive and unnecessarily long.
v1.3.2
December 30, 2020
- Adds your longest no-hint win streat to the stats page (for a little extra of those sweet, sweet bragging rights).
- Not that anybody else cares, but: behind the scenes, I got rid of a deeply nested ternary operator in favor of something much simpler, which really should’ve been the obvious way to go from the beginning, so my code is slightly less embarrassing now. Yay, me!
v1.3.1
December 27, 2020
- Adds your preferred word set and hint setting to the stats page.
- Visual refinements to the stats page. (That’s what designers call “tinkering” to make it sound worthwhile.)
- Updates some award text to be more succinct.
- Speeds up the progress bar on achievements (because they were kinda slow).
v1.3.0
December 24, 2020
- Shows many more statistics related to hint usage, including how many guesses each type of hint saves you on average, compared to an average game played without hints. (Previously, it only showed your wins and win percentage without hints, which kinda felt a little judgy. …Ooh, is “judgy” a word in here? It is now.)
- Stats page now also shows your average guesses both per game and per win. (Previously, it only showed the per win number.)
- Make buttons on some modals fit slightly better.
- Eliminate trailing zeroes in decimals on the stats page (e.g., 75.0% is now just 75%).
v1.2.4
December 22, 2020
- Increases the odds of getting a word from the Tricky set while playing on Expanded, in order to make the possibility of a Tricky word roughly the same as that of getting a Basic word. (Previously, you were significantly more likely to get a Basic word.)
v1.2.3
December 14, 2020
- Allows using spaces when entering a guess (so that you can press the space bar to advance to the next letter input).
- Slightly reduces the length of time required to long-press a letter.
- Revamps the "how to play" page with better strategy advice and marks displayed on the list of guesses.
- Updates acknowledgements page.
v1.2.2
December 13, 2020
- This. This changelog. This is the change. (So meta!)
v1.2.1
December 13, 2020
- Delays the appearance of the “game over” screen (win or lose), so that you can see the result of your latest guess first, to build dramatic tension.
- Minor appearance improvements.
- A couple new little Easter eggs…
v1.2.0 “Jesse”
December 12, 2020
- Adds the “Game settings” button to the game over screen, and adds new icons for that screen.
v1.1.0 “Sumeet”
December 11, 2020
- Adds ability to view the board after the game is over, for the purpose of review and humble-bragging on social media.
- As a result of the above, the “closest guess(es)” section of the loss screen has been removed, as it’s no longer relevant.
v1.0.1
December 10, 2020
- Fixes a Safari issue with device vibration which, as a side effect, prevented donations on iOS. (Yikes!) Pro tip: always have your mom test your software.
v1.0.0 - The release!
December 10, 2020
- Finally make this app live (200 commits, 100 code files, and approximately 8,000 lines of code later)!
